Melrow Nursery

Melrow Nursery – Tomatoes – 3.4 hectares

Originally built for the growing of flat lettuce in its superb quality soil, Melrow Nursery was acquired by Flavourfresh in the late 1990s.  The site has undergone a complete transformation, with one of the tallest blocks of glass in the UK.  Known as “Genesis” this block has been designed for the future, with energy-saving thermal roof screens, a full recirculation system for irrigation run off and a Combined Heat and Power Energy Centre (CHP).

Smaller than Aldergrove but with two large glasshouses, the Melrow Nursery is managed by Andy Liggat and Craig Dickinson.   Their 20-strong team produce over 90 million tomatoes per year.

"I started working at Lansdale Nursery in 1991 as a seasonal picker and then was offered a full-time job as a crop worker.

After around 6 years I was promoted to a supervisor and in the following years, I was given the opportunity to become Lansdale Nursery Manager. In this role I was required to run the Nursery and Packhouse producing and packing fruit for local shops and supermarkets.

In 2007 Flavourfresh Salads took over the Lansdale site furthering developing its growing abilities. The Lansdale site has 5 blocks which are of various sizes and cover a total area of 6.4 acres in total. This is the only tomato growing site we currently have that grows tomato’s all year round. Modern technology in the form of LED lighting is what helps us produce in the winter months.

In 2019 I was appointment Manager of our Melrow site in Banks, I now run this alongside being manager at Lansdale. I run both sites with the help of the assistant managers and supervisor."
